Walking Dead: Vatos

Episode 4 opened with the sisters Amy and Andrea sitting in a boat, fishing. They reminisced about how Amy would throw them back and Andrea would catch the fish. This was important, because later on, well you just have to watch to know what I am talking about. Not much is going on at camp. Jim is acting weird, I mean really weird. He has started to dig holes, lots of them. He refuses to stop, even after Shane asks him to. He almost beats Shane with a shovel. Once again, we see how Shane is quick to react, and not always the way he needs to. So, Shane ties Jim to a tree, so that he will “calm down.” Jim insists that he is digging the holes because of “something I dreamt last night.” He doesn’t bother to explain further.

The group of men have made it to the city, only to find Merle’s hand, where Merle should have been. See, it turns out that Merle decided to use the handsaw and cut his hand off! Now they are tasked with the job of getting back that bag of guns Rick left near the tank, and finding Merle. I am actually shocked that they didn’t have to really encounter any walkers at all. Then again, they did manage to find a way back into the city that allowed them to move freely the way they needed to.

They part ways, to go about recovering the weapons and Merle now. Glenn manages to make it to the bag of guns, only problem is that some Hispanic looking guys (we will not call them a gang) are claiming it’s their bag. Glenn gets kidnapped and the Vatos drive off, with the small Korean guy inside. Luckily, one of the gang’s members is left behind. The guys attempt to interrogate him. It finally comes to Daryl acting like he cut off his brother’s hand, which of course makes the kid sing like a canary. He tells them where the guns are being held. So now the guys are still without their big ole bag of guns, and now they are short one member of their survivors group.

Back at the camp, things have somewhat improved. The guys get back to the camp, while the rest of the survivors are sitting around, enjoying fish and the campfire. It turns out to be the same fish that the two sisters caught earlier in the episode.

The groups are facing off now. They get interrupted by one of the Vatos’ grandmas. She says to stop and that she knows where Glenn is. She decides to take Rick to him. Glenn is safe and being taken care of at the senior center. It turns out that the Hispanic guys are protecting the seniors (grandparents) that got left behind by the doctors and nurses when the outbreak happened. Most of the elders are related to the Vatos.

The two leaders part ways, much friendlier than the first time they met. They manage to make it back to their van, or what was there. It looks like somebody took their vehicle, and of course it could only be one person…Merle. So now they have to back to camp, and NOW!

Guys are still enroute to the camp, with Glenn, as least as far as we know. There is no sign of Merle. They have most of the bag of guns now, thanks to finding out that the Vatos are not thugs, but protectors and guardians. Rick gives the Vatos some out of the bag, to help keep the seniors safe. It turns out that Rick and the gang return, just in time. A group of roaming walkers has found the camp. They bite a few people we never really see, along with Jim and Amy. Our heroes manage to kill the rest of the walkers without anybody else having to die.

Near the very end of the episode, Jim utters these words, “I remember my dream now…why I dug the holes.”

This episode was a little slow-moving for me. I felt that the dramatic moments were great, but it just seemed like more could have taken place. I did like the last few minutes more than the rest of it, besides finding out the Vatos are good guys, and not gun-toting gang members. Just when you think it’s safe for everything to be calm and peaceful…BAM, a group of roaming walkers descend on the camp and wreak havoc and horror with every step, every bite. While it was sad to see a few of the group die, it was a great way to end Vatos.
