Walking Dead: Guts

Last time we left off, Rick was trapped or hiding inside a military tank, surrounded by zombies. Then he heard a male voice on a walkie inside the tank. That voice, we learn later belongs to Glenn (Steven Yeun). He instructs him on how to get out of the tank without being noticed by the walkers. Glenn is one of a small group of survivors who are hiding out in an abandoned shopping mall store. Rick meets Andrea (after she threatens to shoot him in the head with the safety still on), T-Dog, Jacqui (she used to work in a city office), and Merle Dixon (one racist SOB who takes an instant disliking to Rick; played by Michal Rooker). They all converge on the rooftop, which leads to a heated discussion between Merle and Rick. Rick gets tired of Merle’s racist crap and he handcuffs him to a pipe. They all decide to make a run for it, and they leave Merle trapped on the rooftop, handcuffed to a pipe. Rick hatches a plan to use zombie goo to disguise their “human smell”. T-Dog goes back up to the roof and tries to toss the handcuff key to Merle, but it falls down a hole.

Racial Tension

The scared but motivated group end up killing a walker and then they cover their clothes with guts and blood. This one scene almost made me lose it. The reactions of the people were realistic and I could almost smell the dead flesh as they slaughtered the zombie and Rick and Glenn then covered themselves head to toe with entrails and goo. The rest of the group then has to leave the building and walk outside, and wait. So Jacqui, Andrea, and T-Dog are waiting for Glenn and Rick, all the while keeping an eye on the duo as they walk among the dead. Of course, as luck would have it, rain drops begin to fall. The goo starts to slowly wear off, as they continue to weave and make their way through the very large crowd.

Glenn and Rick then have to separate as they approach an impound lot. Glenn gets to drive a very sports red car with the alarm on, while Rick has to get back to the delivery truck he spotted earlier in the episode. His plan is to get everybody else in the back of the truck and drive off to somewhere outside the city. He has the fun job of backing the delivery truck up to the mall store where Jacqui, T-Dog, and Andrea are waiting. They all succeed. Rick manages to pick up the rest of the group while Glenn is off driving ahead of them, enjoying the feel of the sporty red car. That is where the episode ends. I of course did not mention that the group of survivors outside of the city have a few scenes.

Survivors Outside the City

We learn that Andrea’s sister Amy is one of the group, as well as Shane, Carl, Lori, and a few others. We also learn what was hinted at in the first episode. Shane and Lori are an item (they have a short sex scene in which Shane discovers that Lori still wears her wedding ring). Shane has taken it upon himself to take over as father figure for Carl. What they don’t know, that we know, is that Rick is alive. Not only is he alive still, but he is on his way to them. This of course made for a very delicious sense of irony. And as with the first episode, it made me want to watch the third episode that second…knowing that everything was going to come to a head.

If you have not watched The Walking Dead yet, do it and soon. Seriously, this is a great show and I am so grateful to AMC for deciding to do this show. It is just that good.
