First, I need to say something. I realize that our website is mostly about female actresses in the many venues of media, mainly concerning movies and television shows. But I could not miss a chance to review this amazing TV series, that only just premiered Halloween night on AMC. I acknowledge that there are no main female actresses so far in this show. I am okay with that at least temporarily. That said, I really want to talk about the latest TV series that already drew in some 4 million viewers, the largest debut of a cable TV series thus far.
If, for the last ten months, you have been living under a rock, then you were pleasantly surprised to learn about a series concerning survivors of a zombie apocalypse and of course, the zombies. They will be referred to now as the Walking Dead. See how easy that rolls off the tongue? We start the show with Rick Grimes, deputy Sheriff of a small town. He is talking with his partner about life and love, and mostly his marriage. They of course answer a call, which results in Rick getting shot. Before he gets shot, he sees a harmless little girl, who eventually tries to bite him. He’s forced to shoot her, and he draws the fire of the armed people who shoot him in a police stand-off.
Through some creative camera work, we find out that he ended up going into a coma at some point. The flowers his partner brought are now dead. The clock no longer moves at normal speed. A conversation that his partner Shane was having with him, he suddenly wakes up and tries to resume their talk, only to find that he is alone. When I say alone, I mean alone. The hum of the machines that were keeping his bodily activities monitored is silent. There are no nurses rushing around, tending to other patients. He in fact, walks around a lot. He sees bloodstains on the floor and strange writing on the double doors, leading to another part of the hospital: Don’t Open. Dead Inside. Someone has gone to great lengths to lock this door off, with the large padlock on the doors and a big 2×4, keeping those doors closed. He walks around some more, only to find bodies. After he makes his way outside, he sees a lot more bodies, in body bags, surrounding him. Something is very wrong with this picture.
He eventually makes his way back to his old house, only to be almost shot by a kid, after he sees his first Walker aka, a zombie. He is taken in by Morgan Jones and his kid, and is then briefed on the situation. His world has gone to shit. People have become Walkers and it’s not safe to do a lot of things now, especially fire a gun. That seems to draw their attention. I won’t waste time on some of the emotional stuff, only to say that the kid’s mom is a Walker and it’s very sad. Rick gets inside his old house, only to find it in complete disarray. Drawers are thrown open and stuff is everywhere, at least in his bedroom and his son’s room. This leads Rick to believe that his family is still alive.
He and Morgan are quick friends and he is taught a lesson on how to dispose of Walkers. He and Morgan and his son get into the police station, and proceed to arm themselves to the T. He makes the decision that he will go into the city, because there is a supposed safe place in Atlanta. Completely unknown to him, his wife and son are not too far from the city. They are alive and well, along with his old partner Shane. The ironic thing is that his partner and his wife are now together, and this reviewer believes that they were having an affair before everything went to shit. They never show her at the hospital. We only see her image in a photo Rick carries around with him, along with a picture of his son.
Rick steals a horse and makes it to the city, only to find nothing is much better there. It’s actually worse! There are more Walkers here than in that small town he left behind, and now, he finds himself very much outnumbered. He gets knocked off his horse (the borrowed horse) and a crowd, a very large crowd of Walkers, proceeds to attack and feast on the horse. He has no choice but to get inside a military tank, that happens to be almost in the middle of the road. He kills a military zombie inside and now is stuck in there, while his main mode of transportation is being eaten. He hears a voice on a walkie and that is pretty much where the first epic episode of “The Walking Dead” ends.
A few thoughts on this series…I love that there is another great television series now, for the horror-loving masses. But this show is not just for zombie lovers and horror fanatics, although there is plenty of great material for both groups. This show is more importantly, about a group of survivors and the scary shit they have to endure. I like Rick’s character. He is a pretty straightforward person and only wants to reunite with his wife Lori and their son Carl. I don’t like his wife Lori. Part of me thinks that she and Shane were together before Rick ended up shot and in a coma. I know we probably won’t see Morgan’s character again, and I also know that we are in for a lot more gore, action, tragedy, and yes, drama.
If you for some reason have not seen the first episode of The Walking Dead (and yes, I know there was a second episode. I will be posting that review before the week is over!) then what are you waiting for? This is a huge deal, and the fact that this series (already said to be in for a second season) is based a very popular comic book by Robert Kirkman makes it even more awesome. This comic book series is ongoing even, with some 78 issues already made. Frank Darabont writes, directs and is the executive producer of this amazing new TV show. This all, of course, makes for great hopes that this will be the next big TV series that runs for a long time!
you’re a genius. Keep up the crazy good work!!!!
