Okay, so I realize and know that this movie came out a while ago. But I’m not going to let that stop me from reviewing it anyway. I recently just had the privilege of finally seeing the movie. Lol. I keep myself busy with the latest horror movie releases. So it’s really no surprise that I let this one (and a few others) slip right through my fingers.
The movie opens with Sarah (Shuana McDonald) and her boyfriend, driving on their way somewhere. They end up getting into a horrific car wreck. Her boyfriend dies and she somehow miraculously survives. She’s plagued by nightmares for a while. At some point, her little cache of friends remember that she is yes, alive and might need to get away for a while. Now, I don’t remember whose idea it was to go on some rock-climbing expedition. But I know that if I had been involved in a horrible accident, the last thing I would want to do is put myself at risk that soon after…
So Sarah and her ragtag group of friends get geared up and ready for their harmless little adventure. Hah! Nothing is harmless, except maybe that tall geeky guy at the video store. He couldn’t hurt a fly. Back to my review…they have their helmets, carbines, water bags, food, drinks, and whatever else they could possibly need. They’re set. Nothing could go wrong. Except that Sarah’s best friend takes them to a set of unknown/undiscovered caves and caverns. Nobody will ever even know where they have disappeared to, in case something goes wrong. And, of course, being underground gives you zero signal on your Razr2. It’s at this point that things go wrong. People are injured. Creatures appear. People fight and either die or survive. It’s bloody and gory and just wonderful. The movie had this blood-loving freak licking her chops and thirsty for even more!
Now, I thought that this was a great kick-ass Girl power movie. What I mean by that is each and every girl was strong and smart. (mostly) These were not weak characters to be easily killed off. The main character did kick some major creature ass… I would say more but that would spoil the movie for some of the few who did not get to see The Descent. The plot was well-written. This was an original movie idea, not a remake or paraphrase of another movie. That alone made it worth looking into. Not all the girls were American or British. The variety of accents and personalities was a nice mix in my opinion. You had blondes and brunettes. Short and tall. Hot and plain. While the demise for some was gruesome and hard to block out, it was still a good movie. The ending did leave something to be desired. I’m in total confusion about what the end was really trying to say. Anybody want to clue me in? Please? I gotsta know!!!
To conclude, I would definitely recommend this movie to the lazy and forgetful horror movie-goers that have not yet seen The Descent. Go… rent this movie if you can find it. Or watch it On Demand like I did. Let me know what that damn ending was supposed to mean. Grr…
