Skip the ‘Venom’…Really

Post Rating

I have deliberately put this review off for a few days now. For one, the movie was okay. Two, no female actresses stood out because of their amazing acting ability. In other words, I didn’t like Venom. I thought the plot was dull and unimaginative. The actors, male and female, were okay. It didn’t seem like anybody was believable. And of course the ending left something to be desired.

With a name like Venom, I expected the snakes to take center stage. But it was mostly about Agnus Bruckner’s character Eden Sinclair, trying to avoid and defeat the demon-possessed town gas station owner Ray. Her friend Cece, played by Meagan Good, seemed to fall into a stereotypical role of sorts. The whole idea that a young black woman would of course have a lot of knowledge with dealing with the darker arts of voodoo. I disagreed with it. There were more than enough points in the movie that made me shake my head A lot! Don’t go that way…Why is she doing this? Actions and lines were forced upon the actors.

There were two reasons, starting out, that I decided to rent this movie. One, Meagan Good was decent in Unborn, playing Odette Yustman’s best friend Romy. Two, I couldn’t believe that Laura Ramsey had acted in another horror film besides the Ruins. She was pretty good in that one. Maybe this will really drive home the fact that could be called a scream queen! It appeared that this film would be a good fit! Boy, was I wrong!

I am not saying that the guys and girls in Venom couldn’t act. I have seen other instances that clearly show otherwise! What I am saying is that the director Jim Gillespie, should have done something else. He was good enough for Joyride and IKWYDLS! These people should have been cast in a different movie with better lines and subtext! I hate when people waste their time and don’t make the money that was hoped and planned for.

I will be keeping an open mind for other films that this cast does in the future. I will probably even rent a few of the movies to see if they can really act. But I won’t be holding out for another movie about demon possession (Damn! I was really looking forward to Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox. Okay, that will be the exception. Wait! Isn’t Night of the Demons coming out soon? Like next year?) unless I am thoroughly convinced before seeing it that it will be something worth watching! And, I will keep my eyes open for anything the writers of this movie do later…and I will avoid them at all costs!!!
