I’ve stated before in other blog posts that I fall behind when I review movies. What can I say? I’m a busy woman with work, school, and my family. So last night, with nothing else to do, I sat down and watched One Missed Call. This particular horror movie stars Shannyn Sossamon and Ed Burns. Now if you aren’t familiar with this movie, maybe you know of the Japanese movie it was based on in 2003 by the name of Chakushin Ari. That’s right, another American director decided to remake yet another Japanese horror movie. It so far has only worked for The Ring, The Ring 2, The Grudges, and one of my newest favorites in the genre Shutter. The reason I am telling you this is a remake, is because you get some of the traditional horrific imagery courtesy of Japanese horror…yucky looking bugs and creepy ghost things. On the other hand, you almost have the feel of the Final Destination movies. Let me explain…
In One Missed Call, a young woman’s friends (and her brother) start to die off. First to go is Meagan Good’s character Shelly. She dies in a rather strange way and just happens to be on the phone with her best friend at the time. The recording of her death is then sent to everyone who was in her cell phone’s address book. One by one, girls start dying in very odd and graphic ways. And yes I mean girls, all with the exception of Shannyn’s character’s (Beth is her name btw) brother Brian. She starts to notice the trend and then contacts the police, which is where she meets Ed Burns’ character Detective Jack Andrews. The movie goes on and eventually you find out why the cell phone recordings at the exact time of people’s deaths. I won’t give everything away, mind you!
Shannyn aka Beth did a decent job as the depressed and intelligent main character. The reason for her sadness is something you find out about halfway into the movie. I have to say I liked her performance better in Catacombs. The Order and Devour just don’t display her acting abilities as far as horror goes. She shines in Catacombs, and I don’t know if she’ll be able to pull off any other kind of dark and scary movie ever again. Her character was that believable! And when I say this movie was good, it did manage to rake in about 42 million dollars. Yes she had a recurring role on Moonlight as Coraline/Morgan, Mick’s bloodsucking ex, but that’s another gripe there altogether.
So let’s sum this up. One Missed Call was for the most part entertaining, with a few mistakes along the way. Shannyn did decent enough for the movie to make over $40 million. But if you really want to see her act her best (horror wise people, otherwise it’s all about Knight’s Tale really), then you need to rent Catacombs. If the local movie rental place doesn’t have a copy, then head on over to Netflix! They happen to have this gem on DVD and Blu-ray!
Hey, I like this post. Keep them coming. thanks
