After holding off on watching anything even remotely related to the HBO series True Blood, I’m weighing in. I have become a fan of the series. I’m only wondering now how long it would have taken me to sit down and watch a full episode (and the rest of season 1) had it not been for HBO’s decision to show all of season one starting a few days before New Year’s Eve! That’s right. I set my dvr to record every episode of the first season and am happy to say that I was hooked as of episode 1. Don’t get me wrong! I did try to watch the first episode a few years ago but just couldn’t get into it. I judged it prematurely and ended up changing the channel to something else that night and never looked back. I didn’t even consider watching the show seriously until True Blood won several awards on Spike TV’s 2009 Scream Awards back in October. I even posted a lil blurb on the fact that the show had taken so many awards and I wasn’t sure if they were deserved or not. While I still hold that a few of the awards probably should have gone to other people, but I won’t think ill of True Blood anymore!
The first pleasing aspect of the show is Anna Paquin and her performance as Sookie Stackhouse, a young waitress who happens to have the ability of telepathy. Yes, Sookie can read minds or more accurately, hear everyone else’s thoughts. That is, the living breathing people of the town of Bon Temps, a small fictional Louisiana town. Bill changes that fact though. It just so happens that Sookie’s ability does not work with vampires. And so the premise of the show starts. One more thing to note…vampires are everywhere and the public knows it. In a way True Blood touches on racial subjects with the way the public still won’t accept human-vampire couples to start.
Anna Paquin is a delight. She was good as Rogue and I’ve even enjoyed her roles in Trick r Treat and Darkness. She has talent and is the main reason the show works as well as it does. Her chemistry with her real-life fiance and co-star Stephen Moyer also lends to the success and enjoyment you can get from True Blood. The first two seasons have concluded and the cast and crew are hard at work on Season 3. If you have not seen a single episode of True Blood, make sure you do!
P.S. Netflix happens to have both season one and season 2 on dvd, so you don’t have to wait for HBO to replay them! If you enjoy vampires at all, check the show out, and let me know what your thoughts are on True Blood. If you’re more of a reader than tv show watcher, the series is based on the book series Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris! As soon as I can find them, I’ll be killing some serious time by reading them all!!
I love the show too, but like many others who tried to read the books after being hooked by True Blood, well let me say, what a disappointment. It’s the first time ever that a book came no where close to being better then the TV show or movie.
